Scully said defiantly, as she snatched the keys from Mulder's hand. Her tone being not at all pleasant, Mulder did not argue. "Fine". He said indifferently. He knew this trip had been as difficult for her as it had been for him. Not so much the case, but the overt innuendo of the locals as to the nature of their relationship. Not that they hadn't heard it before. Everyone assumed a great deal where their relationship was concerned. However he had never heard Scully have to define their partnership so much. He supposed it was inevitable though. He had told her loved her already. She wasn't ready for it though. He heard the weary 'oh bother' escape her lips a thousand times a day in as many ways. Everything about her said she was not ready to go down that bumpy (at best) road. That was OK with him, he could wait for her. He heard a sharp sigh escape her lips. She muttered an almost inaudible 'fuck'. "What"? He asked instinctively. "We missed our flight". She said, running her fingers through her hair. "I guess it's back to the honeymoon suite". Mulder said all to quickly. He winced visibly at his own words, regretting them as soon as the left his mouth. She let go of a breath she didn't relize she was holding. "Not funny". Was all she could manage. Reluctantly she started the car, and drove out of the high school parking lot. Glad to be away from everyone, but scared shitless of what was to come. She knew this was going to have to be discussed sooner or later, she preferred later, but fate has a funny way of playing with your mind sometimes. All the delusions she could come up with could not stand the force of her most basic truth. She loved him more than anything. He had gone literally to the ends of the earth for her. Snatched her for the very jaws of death on more than one occasion. Only he understood her silent pain. He knew what she could not admit. He held all of her dark secretes for safe keeping. She thought of those horrors every single day in perfect clarity. She knew everything that had happened to her, more than she could ever bare to tell him. She just couldn't bring herself to speak of it. Just like she couldn't bare to tell him she loved him. It was just to frightening to think of what they would become if the took that final plunge into their undeniable destiny. It would be.. earth shattering.. at the least. Was she truly ready for that? It didn't matter, it was time to end this facade, time to end this hurtful game of cat and mouse. The drive to the motel was silent, and strained. Why on earth she insisted on driving was beyond her, she really hated it. "Hey mom, those FBI agents are back". The young girl called behind a curtain that separated the front desk from the living quarters curtain. The older woman appeared at the desk. "Nice to see you two again, did ya leave something behind"? She asked. Mulder cleared his throat to speak, but Scully spoke first. "No ma'am we just need a couple of rooms for the night". She said. "I only have the one room, the one ya'll where in last night". She said, and gave Mulder a little wink. Mulder stifled a smile for Scully's sake. Scully let out an annoyed breath. "Fine, we'll take it". She said wearily. She still didn't like the idea of this confrontation, but fate had already made it's plans. She took the keys, and headed out the door. As soon as they entered the sparse, yet clean room Scully felt an ominous weight settle into her chest. She glanced at Mulder. She could tell he was feeling his own brand of panic. He was wearing the 'face'. At least she wasn't the only one scared here. She shut the door behind them. For some reason it sounded much louder than normal when it made contact with the door frame. Scully jumped slightly. They both turned to glance at it. 'Just do it'. She said to herself. Their eyes met for the first time since she had returned from the restroom at the high school. "You hungry"? He asked. "Starved". She replied, the shattering of the earth could wait a little while. Half a pizza and three beers later...... Mulder stacked the empty beer bottles back into their cart, and placed it on top of the empty pizza box on the small table. Scully was sitting on the bed with piles of neatly stacked papers sitting around her. Thoughts of a confrontation left her after the second beer. She was really too buzzed to be doing paperwork, but it kept her mind off of other more dangerous thoughts. Mulder sat across from her in a chair beside the table. His legs shook with a steady nervous energy. "Hey Scully wanna order a movie"? He asked, his tone indicating that it would defiantly not be a Disney. Scully glanced at him over the top of her glasses. She tossed her pin on the bed, and took a long drawn out breath. "What kind of movie"? She asked, deciding to play along, her tone suspicious. "Come on Scully, cheap motel.. movies". He said in a 'wink wink nudge nudge' kinda way. "Please tell me your not still watching that crap". Scully replied exasperated. Mulder shrugged. "I gotta get my jollies somehow". He said. Something about the statement made her feel guilty, although she was certain it was meant to be self deprecating. He saw the pained look cross her face. "Hey...I was just kidding, I didn't mean that". He said, and reached out and squeezed her arm. But she knew it was true. He denied himself the possibility of other relationships because of her, and she did the same for him. But he was the only one willing to be open about how they felt about each other. 'Here we go'. She thought. She cleared the space beside her, and patted it. "I really think we need to talk". She said. Mulder swallowed hard, a heavy weight suddenly appeared in his chest. "Whatever you want Scully". He said, and moved to the spot on the bed she had cleared for him. She look down at the gaudy comforter, and picked at the fuzz. "God Mulder, why does everything have to be so damn complicated all the time"? She asked rhetorically, without looking up. Mulder took her hand in his. "You don't have to do this". He said quietly. Finally she looked at him. "Yes I do, it's just not fair to you anymore. I know you are waiting for me to open up. I know that it is me that is keeping us from doing the only thing that really makes sense anymore. I'm afraid Mulder. I'm afraid of the need I have for you, I'm afraid of loosing myself in you.... I'm afraid of loosing you". She said, tears filling her eyes. He pulled her close. "I don't want you to doing anything you are of unsure of". He said gently in her ear. She pulled back from him. "Don't you see? Loving you is the only thing I am sure of. I do love you Mulder. I love you so much it hurts. You've toppled my world, and there is no way I can ever put it right. I am tired of running from this". She said, and placed a hand gently on his cheek. He turned his head slightly and kissed the palm of her hand, then removed it from his cheek. He held her hand between the two of his. "Look, I know you, you don't want to do this now. Your feeling pressured by cirrcumstance, and I don't want that" He said softly. She shook her head. "No Mulder it's time to come clean on this. It's time for both of us to stop running. I'm playing for keeps here, there are no take backs". She said. Mulder let go of a small laugh despite himself. "You know I always pictured this moment somewhere much more romantic". He said. Scully arched an eyebrow at him. "Oh"? She asked. Mulder nodded his head. "Yeah... a cheap motel in Maine". He replied. Scully smiled at that, and placed her hands on the back of his neck. "Your a riot". She said, and pulled his forehead to hers. Mulder returned the smile. "Yeah, well your beautiful". He said and kissed her nose lightly. A sudden flash of deja-vu hit her. The last time they were like this, they had almost torn this wall down. The fairest brush of his lips on her's had kept her awake many a night, as had the horrors that had followed that fateful night in his hallway. She had thought about it alot, they would have made love that night had fate not twisted it's cruel knife in their backs. So now here they sit, picking up where they left off, fate once agian playing it's own game. She slid her hands around to his cheeks, and met his eyes. He opened his mouth to say something, but she laid a finger on his lips, and shook her head. "No more words". She said, and took action. She kissed him tenderly on his lips, then pulled back to see his face. What she saw both scared her and thrilled her. Her hands slid down his neck to his shoulders. He wrapped his arms around her waist, and pulled her back to him. He covered her mouth with his own, parting her lips easily with his tounge. A slow burning fire traveled down her throat to the pit of her stomache, then exploded into a nucular furnace. His tounge slowly explored the soft recesses of her mouth, as he gently lowered her down on the bed. His hand slowly ran the length of her torso, as she pulled him onto her. He broke the kiss tenderly. "No regrets Scully". He whispered. "No regrets Mulder, this is our moment in time". She confrimed. -fin- Norma Roberts Normaljean@aol.com "If I quite now they win". -Scully
